About Chess

Play chess free in your browser on phone or desktop, with no download or sign-up. Pick white, black or random and take on a strong computer opponent at any of 20 strength levels, from casual to brutal. Drag or tap to move, take back a move when you slip, or resign and start fresh. The board flips with one key, and the move list keeps track of the game. It is a full game of classic chess, ready whenever you are.

Controls
Mouse: click a piece then a square, or drag it. Touch: tap a piece then a square, or drag. Arrow keys step through the moves, F flips the board.
Length
20 min per round

Tips

  1. Start a few levels low and move up after each win. Climbing the ladder teaches more than losing at level 20.
  2. Develop knights and bishops before moving the queen, and castle early to keep your king safe.
  3. Before every move, check what your opponent's last move threatens. Most blunders come from skipping that.
